Ana Beatriz Cordeiro Recognized as Disney Conservation Hero

SILVA JARDIM, RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL, 3 MARCH 2022 - Happiness, excitement, and saudade (a feeling that can only be expressed in Portuguese).  A mixture of emotions overcomes Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado and Save the Golden Lion Tamarin as we announce today that our dear partner ANA BEATRIZ CORDEIRO has been honored posthumously as one of 15 recipients around the world of the 2021 Disney Conservation Hero Award.   Ana left us in April 2021 after contracting Covid in the hospital while beginning a cancer treatment. 

The Disney Conservation Hero Award recognizes local citizens for their commitment to save wildlife, protect habitats and inspire their communities to take part in conservation efforts to create a healthier home for people and wildlife.  Tree nursery owner, educator, ecotourism business woman, rural landowner, Ana Beatriz lived her project she called “Apprentice Farmer” at the Fazenda dos Cordeiros in Silva Jardim, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.   An active member of the Associação Mico-Leão-Dourado (AMLD), she was a special partner of the Golden Lion Tamarin Conservation Program.   With an incredible capacity to bring together the most diverse people, she enchanted everyone as she talked about forest conservation, rural tourism, the golden lion tamarin, and local development.  Ana Beatriz is greatly missed, but she leaves an immense legacy.

AMLD has established the Ana Beatriz Cordeiro Remembrance Forest, where local families plant trees in memory of loved ones lost to Covid.  With this Disney Conservation Hero Award, her work receives international recognition.  Hooray for Ana Beatriz and hooray for nature!
