Be a GLT Hero.
Now more than ever, golden lion tamarins need our help. After 40 years of work to save the species - gradually increasing the number of GLTs from 200 in 1982 to over 3,700 in 2017 - we now face a serious new challenge. An outbreak of yellow fever hit Brazil, resulting in the death of approximately one in every three GLTs.
With the help of experts in disease control in both human and non-human primates, Save the Golden Lion Tamarin (SGLT) and Associação Mico Leão Dourado (AMLD) developed a three-pronged effort to set golden lion tamarins back on the path to survival. This plan includes:
Plant trees to reconnect fragmented GLT habitat
Engage people to help protect these forests and GLTs for future generations
In order for our plan to succeed, we need your support. The plan involves both short-term and long-term commitments and many, many hours of work in the field. We are both relying on our experience in certain activities as well as blazing a new trail in combating yellow fever, and we will monitor every step along the way to adapt the plan as we go. It won’t be easy – but no one said saving a species would be. To survive, GLTs need more than a helping hand – they need a HERO. And that hero could be YOU!
