Toni K Allen
Board Member
Since retiring from the private practice of law, Toni has spent most of her time volunteering. Her devotion to the golden lion tamarin began in 2001 when she became a behavior watcher in the National Zoo’s GLT free-range program. The late Jennifer Mickelberg, who was then at the National Zoo, recognized Toni’s interest in the GLT program and, together with the late Devra Kleiman, helped Toni organize several fundraisers in D.C. to benefit the GLTs. Now, with the other members of the SGLT Board of Directors, Toni continues to apply her fundraising and nonprofit organizational experiences to further enhance the opportunities to Save the Golden Lion Tamarin. She also volunteered at the National Zoo as an interpreter in its primate program.
Toni’s other volunteer activities have varied. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Levine School of Music [now Levine Music] for over 20 years, and was its Chair for five years. In 2002, she was appointed a member of the Task Force that began the investigation into the financial dealings of a former Executive Director of the United Way of the National Capital Area; subsequently, she was a member and officer of the reconstituted Board of Directors of that organization.
Toni graduated from Wellesley College with a degree in economics and received her LLB degree from the New York University School of Law. During most of her legal career, she represented electric and gas utilities, involving antitrust, rate and environmental issues.
